What to do if your grievance is political in nature

Extremist political philosophies can be very appealing to some people, especially those who are passionate about certain issues or causes. However, it's important to recognize that extremism can lead to unethical and ultimately ineffective behaviors. Here are some ways to avoid the traps of extremist political philosophy:

  1. Be open-minded and willing to listen to different viewpoints: It's important to be open-minded and willing to consider different viewpoints, even if you disagree with them. This can help you avoid falling into the trap of extremist thinking, which often involves demonizing those who disagree with you.

  2. Seek out diverse sources of information: It's important to seek out diverse sources of information, rather than relying on a single news outlet or social media feed. This can help you avoid falling into the trap of confirmation bias, which is a common feature of extremist thinking.

  3. Be critical of your own beliefs: It's important to be critical of your own beliefs and willing to reassess them in light of new information. This can help you avoid falling into the trap of dogmatism, which is a common feature of extremist thinking.

  4. Don't demonize those who disagree with you: It's important to avoid demonizing those who disagree with you, even if you strongly disagree with their views. This can help you avoid falling into the trap of tribalism, which is a common feature of extremist thinking.

  5. Be willing to compromise: It's important to be willing to compromise and work with others, even if you don't agree with them on everything. This can help you avoid falling into the trap of absolutism, which is a common feature of extremist thinking.

In summary, it's important to be open-minded, seek out diverse sources of information, be critical of your own beliefs, avoid demonizing those who disagree with you, and be willing to compromise. The means we use to reach our goals are not justified by the idealism of goals.  Bad behavior will almost always generate bad results, so let's all try to calm down a little and work with the muddle in the middle.  Centrism is not the worst idea anyone ever had! By following these principles, we can avoid the traps of extremist political philosophy and work towards a more ethical and effective political system.
